The Department of Radiology at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) marked the 12th International Day of Radiology (IDoR 2023) with a focus on the theme “Celebrating Patient Safety.” This annual event brought together radiologists, radiographers, imaging scientists, and other departmental staff worldwide to underscore the pivotal role of healthcare workers in enhancing patient well-being and safety while improving healthcare system efficacy.
In an effort to commemorate this significant occasion, the UPTH Radiology Department initiated a comprehensive sensitization campaign. This involved reaching out to various media platforms to shed light on the theme, emphasizing the impact of radiologists in making a difference for patients through advanced imaging techniques. The department hosted a live program that provided an interactive platform, allowing the audience to pose pertinent questions. This engagement encouraged the public to consider the department’s facilities for expert diagnosis and comprehensive medical care.
The collaborative efforts align with IDoR’s overarching goal of building greater awareness regarding the indispensable contribution of radiology to safe patient care. The focus is on enhancing public understanding of the vital roles played by radiologists and radiographers in the healthcare continuum, leading to benefits such as earlier detection, reduced need for surgeries, and transformative treatment outcomes.
As a culmination of the activities dedicated to IDoR, the department organized a lecture delivered by the esteemed former Head of Department, Dr. Obaabo West. The lecture took participants on a journey through the history of x-ray technology, from its groundbreaking discovery by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895 to its contemporary advancements. Dr. West took the opportunity to inspire the department’s staff, urging them to deliver their best in both practice and patient care.
Dr. Deborah Ray-Offor, the current Head of Department, emphasized the pivotal role of radiology in the broader field of medicine. She highlighted how cutting-edge technology, particularly advanced imaging, plays a crucial role in diagnosis and patient care within hospital settings. Dr. Ray-Offor also underscored the department’s commitment to providing optimal patient care, emphasizing their array of state-of-the-art equipment, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), fluoroscopy, Computed Tomography (CT) scans, X-rays, and ultrasound. The department boasts a skilled team of specialists, including doctors, radiographers, and nurses, dedicated to delivering the highest standard of care to patients.
