Preventive Dentistry
The Department of Preventive Dentistry came into existence in May 2010. It has two units: Community Dentistry and Periodontology. The department also has an annex at the Federal Secretariat, Rumuola. The department is responsible for the prevention of all oral diseases as well as the diagnosis and management of the diseases of the supporting structures of the teeth. The department also provides training for Resident doctors, Dental students, Nursing students, Community health students and does industrial attachment for dental therapist students from the Institute of Dental Technology, Enugu. In addition, it provides training for Dental Technicians from the schools of Dental Technology in Rivers and Bayelsa States.

Services Available
The services rendered by the department include scaling and polishing, subgingival scaling and root planing, splinting of mobile teeth; periodontal surgeries such as crown lengthening, gingivectomy/gingivoplasty, frenectomy,operculectomy, excisional biopsy, open flap debridement;periodontal cosmetic surgeries to improve smile line and cover exposed roots, tissue replacement surgeries like guided tissue regeneration and bone graft, fluoridation of sensitive teeth, oral health education and dietary counseling.
Presently, in addition to oral health education being given to patients in the department, health education talks are also being given to patients at the O & G antenatal clinic, Surgical outpatient clinic, Medical outpatient clinic, Family Medicine clinic, and Paediatric outpatient clinic.

The department is concerned with the prevention of oral diseases as well as the diagnosis and management of the diseases of the supporting structures of the teeth. The department also provides training for Resident doctors, Dental students, Nursing students, Community health students and industrial attachment for dental therapist students from the Institute of Dental Technology, Enugu. In addition, it provides training for Dental technician and Dental Surgery assistants from the schools of Dental Technology in Rivers and Bayelsa States. Oral health education in the outpatients units in the hospital, diet control programmes, plaque control programmes, smoking cessation programme, and community and school outreach programmes are also provided by the department through the community Dentistry Unit.
