A&E HOLDS CAPACITY BUILDING TRAINING FOR STAFF
The Accident & Emergency department of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital holds a week-long seminar on basic and advanced medical care at the department for its staff members to train them on how to detect and handle emergency cases upon arrival at the department.
The seminar which begun on the 13th of February spanning through the 17th of February, 2023, had healthcare and non-health care staff being trained on the use of the automated electrical defibrillators by a guest speaker, Emmanuel Jim James, an American College of Surgeon Course Cordinator and an American Heart Association BLS & ACLS Instructor.
Participants were trained on the identification and management of Cardiac arrests and how to conduct a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Procedure (CPR), treatment protocols for hypertensive and diabetic emergencies. Participants were also trained on Basic Life Support (BLS) & Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) skills by the American Heart Association (AHA) standard.
The week-long training was carried out in batches so the essential clinical activities is not hampered.
Staff Members were also trained on the importance of having an excellent communication skill in order to compliment the services offered at the department which was carried out by a Deputy Director of Nursing, (DDN) Nurse I.B. Eyimina.
The seminar was attended by some management staff in the persons of the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) Prof. Lucky Onotai and the Director of Administration (DA) Madam Erebi Wadiri who both took turns to encourage participants and advised them to see the training as a rear privilege offered to them on a platter of gold by the institution.
The DA in her speech said that in your course of working, you must endeavour to make out to time to also grow yourself on the job in order to keep up with modern best practices which is what the department is doing. She urged every staff in Accident and Emergency Unit to be there for each other, she thanked the Head of Department, Acute Care, A&E, Dr. B.E. Ikpae for striving to lift the Accident and Emergency department higher as it is the major entry point into the hospital and if the department fails, it will greatly affect the hospital.
