On behalf of the entire University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital community, we are delighted to extend our warmest birthday wishes to Professor Henry Arinze Anthony Ugboma, our esteemed Chief Medical Director, on this special day, 15 November.
Professor Ugboma, born on 15 November 1966, is a distinguished clinician, administrator, and academic. He is a Professor of Maternal-Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He has held the role of CMD since 2017, and was re-appointed in 2021 to continue his transformative leadership of UPTH.
Under his stewardship, UPTH has witnessed significant strides:
- He championed the establishment of UPTH Premium, a state-of-the-art medical facility launched in 2025 in partnership with Patricare, aimed at reducing medical tourism by offering world-class, specialized care locally.
- He has overseen major infrastructure upgrades and procurement of advanced medical equipment, positioning UPTH as a technologically advanced teaching hospital.
- In his commitment to service beyond the hospital walls, he was recently conferred with a chieftaincy title, “Ogene of Ndoni Kingdom,” recognizing his selfless outreach and developmental initiatives in his native community.
- He has also emphasized strategic planning: under his leadership, UPTH launched a 5-year strategic plan to deepen capacity in research, training, and excellent patient care.
Academically, Professor Ugboma is not just a leader but a scholar: he is a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS) and has pursued professional training in leadership, administration, ICT, and healthcare management.
Beyond his professional achievements, he is known for his humility, visionary leadership, and dedication to cultivating a culture of transparency, discipline, and performance at UPTH.
