ICT UNIT

The ICT Unit began full operation at the onset of the current administration of Prof. H.A.A Ugboma. The CMD showed his commitment to digital development in UPTH, when he commissioned the launch of the hospital’s official website and the official email service.  He also enabled the use of the Enterprise Software System known as Health-In-A-Box—for the smooth handling of financial transactions, inventory for the laboratories and pharmacies, patients’ medical records and more.

The ICT Unit delivered on the above stated services, and in working with the enterprise software team deployed in the hospital.

During the COVID 19 distress, the ICT Unit of UPTH rose to the challenge providing digital solutions for virtual meetings and conferences. This was crucial for running the hospital in the face of the distancing required for personnel at the time.

Since then, the ICT Unit’s virtual services have become a feature in all kinds of events within and outside UPTH.

The ICT Unit also began the use of Computer Based Tests in the hospital. The team has so far conducted several CBT exams for the clinical departments and the schools within UPTH. The ICT Unit’s CBT’s are noted for efficiency, security and integrity of test questions. The Unit also provides proctor solutions for greater credibility of examinations.

Among the many services performed by UPTH ICT Unit, the Tech Support Sub-Unit is responsible for the repairs, maintenance and updates of hundreds of devices within the hospital community. Every working day, this sub-unit continues to render service to many device owners in UPTH.

Within UPTH, there are hundreds of personnel who received competence in handling computers from enrolling in the ICT Unit’s Computer Literacy Training programme.  This digital literacy programme was the very first innovation of the ICT Unit and has been ongoing ever since.  The Team at the ICT Unit advises investment in digital transformation can only succeed with true digital literacy for all.

The ICT Unit has also been instrumental in the successful accreditation drive of the schools in UPTH—supplying manpower, service and expertise where needed.

Departments like Surgery and Internal Medicine depend on the ICT Unit for the conduct of their Ground Rounds (where academic presentations are made for peer review). The ICT Unit renders virtual capabilities, proper formatting of slides and public address features.

The success of the Ground Rounds of Surgery department has inspired the tradition of UPTH Hospital Ground Rounds—which continues to bring frontline knowledge to the entire hospital community.

 Facilities:

The ICT Unit is domiciled within the hospital at the upper floor of the Dietetics/Catering block. There is a server room and a smart classroom where lectures, virtual meetings and more take place.  There is also a server hub within the hospital where the Health-In-A-Box Enterprise System personnel operate from. Also working alongside the Health-In-A-Box team are competent personnel from the UPTH ICT Unit. This team’s service is huge as they cover the length and breadth of the hospital—ensuring daily smooth operations of the entire deployed systems.

Staff Strength:

The ICT Unit has a core team of twenty-three and other personnel deployed in several departments of the UPTH. These are persons of diverse skillsets—ranging from Tech Support Specialist, Network Specialist, Data and Programme analyst, Website Specialist and Software Engineer.

Vision:

The ICT Unit’s collective vision is the deepening of skills and capabilities. We hope to see greater support and financing for innovative ventures. And we wish to be ready and competent when goodwill is invested in the ICT Unit. We understand our pivotal position in the scheme of things and we intend to align our vision and actions with the vision of our capable CMD—Prof. Henry A.A. Ugboma.

THE LIFESTYLE MEDICINE CLINIC

Lifestyle Medicine is a branch of evidence-based medicine in which comprehensive lifestyle changes (including nutrition, physical activity, stress management, social support, and environmental exposures) are used to prevent, treat and reverse the progression of chronic diseases by addressing their underlying causes.

Lifestyle medicine interventions include health risk assessment screening, health behaviour change counseling and clinical application of lifestyle modification.

History:
The lifestyle Medicine clinic of UPTH began in January 2018. It was borne out of the need to tackle the menace of an increasing prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases(NCDs) by a paradigm shift to treating the cause of the disease in line with global trend.

It is domiciled within the NHIS clinic and runs weekly offering its services predominantly to NHIS clients through periodic medical assessment with a view to prevention, treatment, and reversal of NCDs among these clients.

Protocol:
The clients access services in the clinic through the NHIS records. They are attended to by the nurse where their vital signs and anthropometric measurements are taken. They are directed to the attending physician where they are first educated on the importance of lifestyle medicine. They also undergo health risk assessment screening which helps unveil their individual areas of need for lifestyle modification. Necessary investigations are requested for. During subsequent scheduled visits, results of investigations are reviewed and patient’s areas of need are specifically addressed. This includes exercise prescription, nutrition counseling, stress management, and social support.

Staff Strength:
The clinic is run by Family Physicians with a special interest in Lifestyle Medicine. It is headed by Dr(Mrs) O.N. Onya, a Chief Consultant Family Physician with a special interest in Lifestyle Medicine. She is a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and the Vice President (Membership) of the Society of Lifestyle Medicine Association of Nigeria.

The other Physician is Dr. (Mrs.) A. John, a Fellow of West African College of Physician (Family Medicine). She is a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and Society of Lifestyle Medicine Association of Nigeria.

Since the clinic is domiciled in the NHIS clinic, other staff are the NHIS staff.

Prospect:
The Lifestyle Medicine clinic aspires to be a stand-alone clinic serving both walk-in and NHIS clinic patients with an independent revolving fund.

The clinic looks forward to greater interdepartmental collaboration.

It looks forward to a team of trained healthcare professionals undertaking its activities. These include a nurse, exercise physiologist, nutrition counselor all trained in lifestyle medicine.

The infrastructural needs of the clinic include a one-stop facility with a clinic area, laboratory, gym area, culinary kitchen. Further services would include disease reversal programmes, Exercise in the workplace program etc.
