The event commenced with remarks from Prof. Braimah, representing the Chief Medical Director, who lauded Prof. Akaniโs outstanding career and her pivotal role in establishing the hospitalโs Oncology Unit. He described her retirement as a milestone marked by grace, dedicated service, and profound institutional impact.
Prof. Nsirimobu I. Paul, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, delivered the welcome address, highlighting Prof. Akaniโs work in paediatric oncology, social paediatrics, and school health. He described her as the embodiment of compassion, integrity, and leadership.
Mrs. Inime Chinwenwo-Aguma, a human rights advocate, delivered a powerful keynote titled โThe Right to Health: Whose Responsibility?โ She emphasized health as a fundamental right and praised Prof. Akani for bridging gaps between healthcare, education, and advocacyโso impactful, she joked, that even a lawyer was invited to a medical send-forth!

Emotional tributes followed, including one from Prof. Henry Ugboma (CMD), who reflected on Prof. Akaniโs diligence and quiet strength. A particularly unforgettable moment came from Ms. Amarachi Kalagbor, a former leukemia patient treated by Prof. Akani in 2003. Her heartfelt testimony moved many to tears, serving as a powerful reminder of the lives transformed by Prof. Akaniโs work.
In recognition of her remarkable contributions, the UPTH Cancer Committee presented her with a special award for her tireless fight against childhood cancer.
In her response, Prof. Akani expressed deep gratitude and humility, crediting God for guiding her journey. Her words were simple yet profound, leaving a lasting impression on all in attendance.
Her send-forth was not merely a farewellโit was a celebration of a life dedicated to healing, leading, and inspiring.
