Our driving objective at UPTH is to become a world class quartenary hospital, using cutting edge technology and highly developed human resources to render excellent medical care/services to the good people of Rivers State and beyond in-order to markedly reduce the number of patients seeking medical tourism abroad.
Established in 1989, the Urology Unit offers urological services to most of south southern Nigeria including Rivers, Bayelsa, parts of Abia, Delta, Imo and Akwa-Ibom States. When the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital is fully functional, the Urology Division performs 20.4 to 29.5% of all surgical procedures in the hospital (Eke/Sapira/Echem 2007). It also provides compulsory urological surgical training for undergraduate medical/dental clinical students of the University of Port Harcourt, compulsory post-graduate training for the resident Doctors from University of Port Harcourt Teaching
Hospital, RSUTH Port Harcourt, Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa, FMC ASABA, UUTH UYo and Niger Delta University Yenagoa.

The Urology Unit operates a robust practice utilized by many patients. The patients who often have co-morbidities offer an array surgical diseases in patients. The lecturers are grounded in general surgery prior to specialization in urology. Thus, many students flock to the urology unit in their free time even when they have not been posted to Urology. On each routine operation day, the unit lists up to 7 patients for various urological operations. The existing facilities, both personnel and infrastructure are enough for the unit to function as an autonomous department of the University of Port Harcourt. In addition, the facilities in UPTH are currently being expanded. This will further create room for further expansion of urological services and training.
