The department of ophthalmology in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching hospital joined an ethnic diaspora group known as Ogbakor Ikwere USA/Canada Incorporated for a 5-day free medical mission, in Emohua Local Government Area, Rivers state.
The week long medical outreach organized by the Ogbakor Ikwere USA/Canada Incorporated had in partnership the Emohua Local Government and other health care providers namely; Timoson Nigeria Limited, Americares, Veckron Hospital LTD, Medical Visions for peace, Chimatems LLG USA, Medical Association of Nigeria (Rivers State branch) and the University of Port -Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) ophthalmology.

Over the years since the mission lasted UPTH had offered services being the foremost health care service provider in the state. The Ophthalmology department of the hospital played a major role in the just concluded medical outreach which took place at the council premises. Head of ophthalmology department, Prof. Sydney Ejimadu with his team of doctors, nurses and other health workers worked together and successfully carried out a total of 53 eye surgeries . Every individual who attended the outreach with any eye related complaint was attended to properly, and given adequate eye drop/drugs and corrective lenses to enhance their vision, special cases that needed further advanced treatment were all referred to Aluu Health (community ophthalmology center) center to commence surgical treatment immediately.
The 5-day free medical outreach featured general diagnosis, medical consultation and treatment , and concluded on the 13th of October 2023. The council chairman, appreciated the leadership of Ogbakor Ikwerre USA/Canada Incorporated for their humanitarian services to the people of Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality back home in Nigeria and the choice of the LGA.
