On Wednesday, 31st December 2025, the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) witnessed a significant milestone in its leadership journey with the formal handover and exit of Prof. Henry A. A. Ugboma as the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital.
The handing-over ceremony marked the successful conclusion of Prof. Ugboma’s tenure, during which he provided purposeful leadership and strategic direction to the institution. His administration was instrumental in strengthening the hospital’s core mandate of research, healthcare delivery, and training, while also contributing to institutional growth, stability, and service excellence.

With effect from 1st January 2026, Prof. Chituru Godwill Orluwene officially assumes office as the new Chief Medical Director of UPTH. His appointment heralds a new chapter in the hospital’s leadership, accompanied by high expectations for sustained progress, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to quality and patient-centered healthcare delivery.
