The Assisted Conception Unit (ACU) of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching hospital has taken delivery of an Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) machine.

The ICSI machine is used for couples experiencing infertility, to aid successful pregnancy. A type of in vitro fertilization (IVF) that is reported to be most helpful when there are male infertility issues. The technique injects sperm into an egg to aid conception/pregnancy.

According to the head of the ACU, Dr. Preye Fiebai, “it is one of the key equipments in IVF treatment and not many IVF laboratories have it ” he added that the unit at inception had one donated to it, but this new ICSI machine now installed, is a newer model . With the clinic recording many successes with IVF pregnancies and deliveries, Dr. Fiebai is optimistic of improved service and many more success with the clinic.

Prof. Datonye Alasia, Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, formally presenting the ICSI machine on behalf management, stated that the use of the ICSI machine is a step further in ART. Prof Alasia while expressing optimism with the appropriate use of the machine says the essence is to help “clients have better quality of service, better outcome and achieve the purpose for which they have come to the hospital for IVF and assisted reproduction care”. The unit also had the commitment of management to continue to support her staff on upgrade courses, for instance sponsorship of the resident embryologist fir training, a commitment which was appreciated by the team.
