Ongoing renovation of the Accident and Emergency Wards

The Management of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) is pleased to inform the public that renovation works are currently ongoing at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency (A&E) Wards as part of our commitment to improving healthcare delivery and enhancing patient experience.

The Accident and Emergency Ward remains one of the busiest and most critical units of the hospital, serving as the first point of contact for patients requiring urgent and life-saving medical attention. Recognizing the vital role this unit plays, the hospital has embarked on a comprehensive upgrade to modernize facilities, improve workflow efficiency, and create a safer, more conducive environment for both patients and healthcare professionals.

Scope of the Renovation

The ongoing renovation includes:

  • Structural upgrades and reinforcement
  • Replacement and modernization of electrical and lighting systems
  • Installation of improved ventilation and cooling systems
  • Upgrading of interior finishes and fittings
  • Reorganization of patient care areas for better efficiency and comfort

These improvements are designed to align the A&E Ward with modern healthcare standards and best practices.

Commitment to Quality Healthcare

Under the leadership of the Chief Medical Director, Management continues to prioritize infrastructure development as a key pillar in delivering quality tertiary healthcare services. The renovation of the Accident and Emergency Ward reflects UPTH’s proactive approach to ensuring that patients receive prompt, efficient, and dignified care in a well-equipped environment.

While construction work is ongoing, temporary arrangements have been made to ensure uninterrupted emergency services. Patients are advised to follow directional signage within the hospital premises and cooperate with staff during this transition period.

Looking Ahead

Upon completion, the renovated A&E Ward will significantly enhance response time, improve patient flow, and provide a more comfortable and secure space for emergency care delivery.

UPTH remains steadfast in its mission to provide excellent, accessible, and patient-centered healthcare services to the community and beyond.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of our patients, staff, and stakeholders as we work towards delivering a more modern and efficient emergency care facility.
