 New Head of Records department set to prioritize confidentiality of patients information

The Department of Medical Records, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) has welcomed a new Head of Department (HOD), Mr. Johnie Johnson Inipusam. Inipusam officially assumed office as HOD, May 25, 2024. bringing a wealth of experience from 2001 when he joined the work force in the department. Over the years, he has ascended through various positions, to a supervisor. He is a professionally certified Health Information Officer, with post graduation qualification.

Inipusam who appreciated support for his smooth transition to office facilitated by his predecessor said “With the help of my professional colleagues, like the HOD I took over from, she has been so encouraging and even in her absence, she has been working with me,” he noted, highlighting the continued support and communication that has been instrumental during this period.

Inipusam’s vision for advancing the depart leadership centers on professionalism and teamwork. He aims to streamline the operations of the department, which has over 100 staff members. Recognizing the complexity and individuality of the staff, he believes that unity and collaboration are key to achieving departmental goals.

One significant challenge identified by the new HOD is the issue of confidentiality concerning patient records. “Currently, non-records staff and, in some instances, patients themselves handle medical folders”. To address this, he plans to increase the frequency of seminars and training sessions to better equip staff for the job. These initiatives are designed to reinforce the importance of confidentiality and enhance teamwork within the department.

With a strong background in health information management and a clear vision for the future, Mr. Johnie Johnson Inipusam is poised to lead the Department of Medical Records at UPTH towards greater efficiency and professionalism. His commitment to teamwork and continuous improvement promises to bring about positive changes, despite the challenges that lie ahead.
