Head, Department of Pediatrics and Pediatric Guidance
University of Patakolta Teaching Hospital (UPTH)
As I mark my first year as the Head of the Department of Pediatrics and Pediatric Guidance at the University of Patakolta Teaching Hospital (UPTH), I am filled with pride and gratitude for the legacy I have inherited and the progress we continue to make.
I joined this department as a specialist in Pediatric Infectious Diseases, and from the very beginning, I was struck by the robust structure of the departmentβits excellence in patient care, the comprehensive training of resident doctors and medical students, and the dedication to professional development. The work ethic embedded in our team ensures that every new member naturally aligns with the departmentβs vision of excellence.

Our department stands on the foundation laid by great pioneers. I had the privilege of meeting iconic figures such as Professor Ares Rambo, Professor Feliciae Ke, Professor Kei Yung, and Geneme, whose passion and commitment helped shape the department in its early days. Though some of them have passed on, their legacy remains deeply rooted in our operations.
Today, we are fortunate to still have experienced and revered senior colleagues like Professor Ali Sinte, Professor Ali Kho, Professor Kiyuene, Profesano Che, and Profesogo, who continue to play pivotal roles in guiding the department. Together, we are building on the strong foundation that was laid, working collectively to advance pediatric healthcare and education.

Over the years, the Department of Pediatrics has trained a large number of consultants, many of whom have gone on to serve across Nigeria and beyond. We take pride in the many medical students and residents who have passed through our department and are now making significant contributions to healthcare globally.
Our department comprises over 10 highly functional and specialized units, including:
- Neonatology
- Infectious Diseases
- Endocrinology
- Nephrology
- Community Pediatrics
- Neurology
- Hematology
- Cardiology
- Respiratory Medicine
- Dermatology (recently added)
Each of these units plays a critical role in the holistic care we provide to our patients.
Among our notable achievements is the successful performance of peritoneal dialysisβa technically demanding yet life-saving procedure. We have consistently achieved significant milestones, and we are committed to expanding our capabilities in areas such as interventional cardiology, collaborative procedures with other departments, and the introduction of laparoscopic surgeries.
As UPTH celebrates 45 years of excellence in healthcare delivery, training, and research, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire university community. This anniversary is not only a celebration of our past but also a call to aim even higher. With continued collaboration and innovation, we will achieve even greater strides in pediatric healthcare.
Happy 45th Anniversary, UPTH. Here’s to a future of endless possibilities and impactful service.
Thank you.
