Our driving objective at UPTH is to become a world class quartenary hospital, using cutting edge technology and highly developed human resources to render excellent medical care/services to the good people of Rivers State and beyond in-order to markedly reduce the number of patients seeking medical tourism abroad.
Brief History:
The Burns and Plastic Unit of the Department of Surgery was created in 1983 when the pioneer Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon in Rivers State, Prof. Difini Datubo Datubo-Brown was employed. The services were not very defined because of space and personnel constraints. All surgical patients were admitted in the same ward in the temporary site of the Hospital which did not help burn care.
In 2007, when the hospital moved to the permanent site, space was created in the Accident and Emergency Department for the Burns Unit where patients with burn injuries were admitted and managed. It is a 15-bed unit with wards for males, females and children, and some private rooms.
Presently:
There are 3 Consultant Surgeons and 3 Senior Registrars in the Unit. Among the Nurses are some who are trained in Burns and Plastic Surgery management in addition to the general nursing care.
The activities of the Unit include Surgical Outpatient Clinics, Ward Rounds, Theatre Sessions, Scientific meetings where Doctors and Nurses discuss current issues in patient management.
A Regional Burn Centre is nearing completion, for a more comprehensive Burn Care
We participate in the Smile Train partnership with University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital for free surgery in patients with Cleft Lip and Palate. Many patients have benefitted from the partnership. A week-long yearly awareness programme called Cleft Week is organized for publicity and greater awareness.
