Head, Department of Pediatrics & Pediatric Guidance, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital
As we mark the 45th anniversary of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), it is both an honor and a privilege to reflect on the journey, achievements, and enduring legacy of the Department of Pediatrics.
My name is Professor Cyrimo Bupol, a specialist in Pediatric Infectious Diseases, and for the past year, I have served as the Head of the Department of Pediatrics and Pediatric Guidance. When I assumed leadership, I inherited a department with a solid foundation—built on robust organization, excellence in medical education, and an unwavering commitment to patient care.

From the training of residents and medical students to the meticulous management of our patients, the department has consistently upheld a culture of good work ethics. This culture was established by our pioneer members, many of whom left an indelible mark on our history. I was fortunate to meet some of these legends—Professor Ares Rambo, Professor Feliciae Ke, and Professor Kei Yung Geneme—all of whom played pivotal roles in shaping the department.
Today, we are still guided by the wisdom of our senior colleagues, such as Professor Ali Sinte, Professor Ali Kho, Professor Kiyuene, and several other esteemed consultants, whose dedication continues to drive our progress.
Over the years, we have trained and graduated numerous pediatric consultants, many of whom serve in various institutions across Nigeria and abroad. Our alumni network is a testament to the department’s strong academic heritage.
The Department of Pediatrics now comprises 10 specialized units:
- Neonatology
- Infectious Diseases
- Endocrinology
- Nephrology
- Community Pediatrics
- Neurology
- Hematology
- Cardiology
- Respiratory Medicine
- Dermatology (recently established)
These units work tirelessly to provide specialized and comprehensive care to our patients, while advancing research and clinical innovation.
Major Milestones and Breakthroughs
Among our notable achievements is the successful performance of peritoneal dialysis, a demanding but lifesaving procedure. This milestone reflects our team’s commitment to delivering high-quality pediatric care. Looking ahead, we aspire to expand into interventional cardiology, laparoscopic surgery, and other advanced procedures in collaboration with relevant departments—keeping pace with global trends in pediatric medicine.
Looking to the Future
As UPTH celebrates its 45th anniversary, we are proud of our contributions and excited about the opportunities ahead. With continued teamwork, innovation, and dedication, we aim to elevate pediatric healthcare to even greater heights.
On behalf of the Department of Pediatrics, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to UPTH on this remarkable milestone. Happy 45th Anniversary!
