 SUCCESSFUL MANAGEMENT OF AN UNKNOWN PATIENT WITH SEVERE TRAUMA BRAIN INJURY

The March Edition of the hospital ground round featured the Anaesthesiology department presenting ” Working the Unknown to the Known – Intensive Care Management of a Severe Traumatic Brain Injury “.

The case of a patient who possibly may have been a Road Traffic Accident (RTA) victim and abandoned, but was found by members of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church who aided and transported him to the hospital for admission and treatment.

The team from the hospital spearheaded by the Anaesthetics team, moved patient within the first 24hours from, the A&E department to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for specialised care, while protocol was escalated for comprehensive management having the Neuro surgeons, ENT, Nurses, Pharmacist, Dietetics, Social welfare, media/publicity departments involved in the case.

The Anaesthetic team working in synergy with other departments achieved clinical success for severe trauma brain injury and the unknown patient gained consciousness to finally reunite with family after months of treatment as an unknown patient.

The presentation allowed the various specialties give explanation as to the collective approach, dedication and commitment they put in to see through patient recovery to his reunion with family.

Patient suffered from a Severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and studies have shown that “People who suffered from head injuries had a two times higher mortality rate than those who did not suffer a TBI” but the team ouch through the odds to achieve his recovery.

A consultant Anaesthesiologist, Dr. Job Otokwala who spoke on the team’s approach and success recorded, used that medium to lend his voice to call on the public to assist people who need medical assistance at the hospital as it will increase their chances of survival.

More support from NGO’s and good spirited individual was also solicited for to fund indigent patient, as this donations helped with the case presented.

Representing the Chief medical director, Prof. Henry A A. Ugboma was the head of department of Surgery, Prof Dodiyi Manuel, Dodiyi commended the Anaesthesiologists for a worthy presentation as he described them as the “unsung heros of surgical practice”.

He highlighted the need for publicity of successes of this magnitude and said the case presented was an example and expressed concern that it is negative information that trends, when in actuality our successes outweighs them .

The ground round was also attended by senior consultants from other departments in the hospital and former CMD, Dr. U S. Etawo.
