ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORD

One of the major innovative services in 2022 was the implementation of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system in the department of family medicine. The full implementation of the EMR took off in May 2022 and it has been widely accepted by all staff of the department and it is functioning effectively.

PATIENTS ENTRY AND WAITING TIME

Family medicine department is the major gateway into the health care system of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH). It is the first contact department for most patients and the hospital management has made it very patient friendly with comfortable patients holding area at its entrance.

From there patients go into the department in batches of five at a time through the Medical Records unit, to the Accounts unit, before getting to the Nurses desk, and finally see the doctors for patients’ consultation.

The patient waiting time had been a huge challenge in the past in the family medicine clinic, but with the innovative way out introduced by the current UPTH management under the distinguished leadership of Prof Henry Ugboma, this

challenge has reduced significantly. This was made possible through the introduction of the EMR which enhances our consultation time and confidential patients’ records keeping. The availability of sufficient desktop and laptop computers, and full computerization of the department is a positive factor that has brought down patient waiting time significantly.

There is also a 24-hour electricity supply in the department through the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution (PHED) company and a standby dedicated alternative power generating plant.

CLINIC DAYS AND TIME:

Monday to Friday.

From 7:30am to 6pm.
