Available Programmes
School of Health Information Management offers two types of programmes.
The first is a two year National Diploma (ND) and the second is also a two year Higher National Diploma (HND).
Admission Procedure
The school runs a two by two (2×2) program. That is, two year National Diploma and two years Higher National Diploma with a one-year Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
The O Level subjects required for entry into the programme are:
Mathematics
English
Biology or Health Science
Physics or Chemistry and any subject chosen from Economics, Geography, and Religious Knowledge.
The school having been fully accredited for her National Diploma is listed on JAMB brochure. That is to say that our admission process goes through JAMB, advertised on radio, one local newspaper and one national newspaper (Tide and Punch).
Any candidate applying for the National Diploma program should possess five credits and above at not more than two sittings which include Mathematics, English Language, Biology or Health Science, Chemistry or Physics, and other subjects. After completing the ND programme, our students then proceed to a one year Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
The Higher National Diploma (HND) is also a two year programme. A student who completes the National Diploma programme and bags a good grade point can proceed to enroll in the Higher National Diploma programme.
Accreditation Status
Our National Diploma (ND) programme is fully accredited and every modality is being put in place to ensure that our Higher National Diploma programme gets full accreditation before the end of the year 2020. We are confident of this.
Our Facilities
School of Health Information Management has well-equipped modern lecture halls. Each of the arms of the school has its own well-equipped conducive classroom for learning.
We also have an ultra-modern smart computer lab for e-learning and for computer appreciation training. This helps students keep abreast of latest development in the world and also helps them put to practice what has been learned in the classroom. There is also WIFI connection for our classrooms in the Medical Records Department.
Our school’s classrooms are fully air-conditioned with modern seats and desks for conducive learning.
Staff Strength
SHIM, UPTH has twenty-seven (27) highly qualified Academic Staff and eleven (11) Non-academic Staff. Our lecturers are indeed seasoned.

A Brief History of SHIM
The interim accreditation was granted during the tenure of Prof. Aaron C. Ojule who was then the Chief Medical Director, UPTH and Dr. C.I. Tobin-West as the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, UPTH.
Prof. Henry A.A Ugboma, assumed office 2018 as the Chief Medical Director, UPTH with Prof. Princewill C. Stanley as the CMAC. They both took the mantle of headship of the hospital and are diligently developing the School of Health Information Management to enviable standards.
The National Diploma programme at School of Health Information Management, UPTH was fully accredited in 2018 under the headship of Prof. Henry A.A Ugboma CMD, UPTH.
The school’s pioneer Coordinator was Mr. Anthony B. Deemua (FHIM, FIPMD) 2014 – 2017. He was assisted by Mrs. Patience N. Amadi.
The second Coordinator 2018 – July 2nd 2019 was Mrs. Patience N. Amadi. And she was assisted by Dr. Gospel Ajuru.
Mr. Anthony B. Deemua (FHIM, FIPMD) was on the 2nd of July, 2019 re-appointed for continuity of his work. Mandate was given to him to restructure, reorganize and put the school on a better footing. He is assisted by Dr. Gospel Ajuru.
The school is presently housed at the Department of Health Records, University of Port-Harcourt Teaching Hospital. And we are proud to state the school continues to grow rapidly.
Events
The school had her first matriculation ceremony on the 22nd of January 2016. The occasion was graced by the then Chief Medical Director Prof. Aaron C. Ojule, academic staff, non-academic staff and the entire hospital community was in attendance.
The school’s recent matriculation took place on the 10th of May, 2019. The matriculation was a joint one with other schools within the hospital. These schools included; Post Basic Accident and Emergency Nursing programme, Community Health Officers Training Programme, School of Post Basic Pediatrics Nursing Studies, School of Social Development and Occupational Therapy. The ceremony was indeed a grand affair.
The first Christmas Carol of Nine Lessons at SHIM happened on the 20th of December, 2019. The ceremony was an unforgettable experience at the UPTH Auditorium. There were special presentations by the students, and wise exhortation from the school’s coordinator-Anthony B. Deemua. It was a great opportunity for students, lecturers and management of the school to wine and dine together.
The school is also preparing for the matriculation of fresh students. Again, it will be a grand joint ceremony with other schools within the hospital.
Plans are ongoing for the school to host her first convocation ceremony within the University of Port-Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
Our Prospects for the Future
To be a frontline school that produce professionals in health information management, professionals in emerging areas such as information governance, data analysis informatics, patients advocacy, entrepreneurship, project management, privacy and security, confidentiality, medical coding and indexing, librarian, banks, and statisticians.
