Who We Are

The UPTH Occupational Health Clinic is a specialized service unit under the Department of Community Medicine, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. We provide evidence-based occupational health services that protect worker health, support employer compliance with regulatory standards, and promote workplace safety and productivity. Our team works with public institutions, private companies, offshore operations and communities, delivering care that is clinically sound and tailored to each work setting.

OUR SERVICES

Occupational Health Research and Program Evaluation

We provide applied occupational health research and evaluation services to support evidence-based practice and policy. Our work includes baseline and periodic assessments, occupational disease surveillance, program monitoring and evaluation, and analysis of workplace health data to identify exposure patterns, health outcomes, and gaps in existing controls. We work with organizations to generate context-specific evidence that informs risk management, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement of occupational health programs. Research outputs are translated into technical reports and actionable recommendations relevant to workplace decision-making.

Medical Fitness Assessments

We conduct pre-employment, pre-placement, annual medical assessments, return-to-work evaluations, and pre-retirement screenings. We also provide statutory medicals for seafarers and drivers, ensuring they meet the physical and psychological standards required for their roles.

Food Handlers Medicals

We carry out regular health screenings for food service workers to ensure compliance with hygiene regulations and reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses.

Domestic Staff Medicals

Health evaluations for household staff, including physical screenings and assessments of mental wellbeing. These checks help promote safety, trust, and overall household health.

Work at Height Assessments

Specialized assessments to evaluate the medical fitness of individuals required to work at elevated heights, helping to prevent accidents and support safety compliance.

Chemical Handlers Assessments

Medical evaluations and ongoing surveillance for workers who handle hazardous substances, aimed at early detection of occupational diseases.

Onsite Medical Assessments

We provide mobile medical services, bringing clinical assessments and health checks directly to your workplace to minimize downtime.

Audiometry and Spirometry

Hearing and lung function testing to detect early signs of noise-induced hearing loss and respiratory issues in occupational settings.

Ergonomic Assessments

We evaluate workspaces and tasks to identify ergonomic risks and provide solutions that reduce strain and prevent injury.

Workplace Substance Use Services

Confidential testing, counselling, and workplace policy support for managing substance use and maintaining a safe, drug free environment.

Occupational Health Policy Development

Our Team

The clinic is run by two public health physicians with specialization in occupational medicine. Prof. K. Douglas, Head of the Occupational Health Unit in the Department of Community Medicine, is a Professor and Consultant Occupational and Public Health Physician at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students, has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, has mentored many consultants, and is a member of the Society of Occupational and Environmental Health Physicians of Nigeria (SOEHPON).
Dr. Onyinye Mba is a public health physician and occupational health specialist affiliated with the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. She has experience in occupational, environmental, and community health practice and serves as a part-time lecturer in Occupational Medicine at ACE-PUTOR and the School of Public Health, UNIPORT. She teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, publishes in medical journals, and is also a member of SOEHPON.
The clinic is further supported by resident doctors in occupational medicine and other occupational health professionals. Together, the team delivers practical, affordable, and effective workplace health solutions focused on protecting worker wellbeing and promoting safe, productive work environments.
