
Demonstrating a commitment to accessible healthcare, the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), in collaboration with Ezensha Nigeria Limited and with sponsorship from the Senator representing Rivers West Senatorial District, Senator (Dr.) Ipalibo Banigo, hosted a Free Medical Outreach at the Community Town Hall and Primary Health Care Centre in Obuama, Degema Local Government Area, Rivers State. This initiative aimed to improve healthcare accessibility for residents of Obuama and neighboring communities โ and it was a resounding success.

The outreach began at 9:00 a.m., with guests and beneficiaries arriving at the venue. A wide range of medical services were offered free of charge, including routine laboratory investigations, eye surgeries and prescription glasses, day-case general surgeries, dental care, drug dispensary, health education, general medical consultations, and vital signs checks. The outreach was both timely and comprehensive, tailored to meet the immediate health needs of the people.
Senator (Dr.) Ipalibo Banigo, while delivering her address to officially flag off the outreach, expressed pride in the initiative. She emphasized that it was a fulfillment of her campaign promises and a demonstration of inclusive, people-centered governance. In her words:
โYou always hear about free medical outreaches, but this one is truly different. Itโs inclusive and structured in a way that caters to every level of the population. We have with us a highly qualified team of doctors, ensuring top-notch care for everyone.โ
A vote of thanks was delivered by the Chairman of the Obuama Community Development Committee, who expressed deep appreciation for the effort, resources, and collaboration that brought the outreach to life.


Notable dignitaries in attendance included the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) UPTH, Prof. Datonye Alasia; Deputy CMAC, Prof. D. Altraide; Prof. Tamunopriye Jaja; the Director of Administration of UPTH, Erebi Wadiri; Senator (Dr.) Ipalibo Banigo; the Chairman of the Obuama Council of Chiefs, Alabo Engr. Obomate Rewland; and the former Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Agiriga Harry, among others.
In his remarks, Prof. Datonye Alasia, CMAC of UPTH, commended the community for its turnout and reaffirmed the importance of such outreach programs in bridging gaps in the healthcare system. He noted that over 1,500 beneficiaries had already been served, with more expected to arrive from neighboring communities. He also praised the Obuama communityโs cooperation, stating that the collaboration was a model for effective community engagement.


One of the beneficiaries, speaking with emotion, expressed heartfelt gratitude:
โWe are truly grateful for a situation like this. We thank God that she was able to send this medical team to care for the people.โ
The outreach stood not just as a medical intervention but as a powerful example of impactful governance, strategic collaboration, and the potential of community-driven healthcare. With thousands reached and more expected, the day concluded with gratitude, fulfillment, and renewed hope for continued healthcare access in the region.
