UPTH MENTAL HEALTH CENTRE RATED BEST BY NPMCN

The Neuropsychiatric and Mental Health Department of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital has been described as one of the best in Nigeria. This is the submission of a visiting team from the National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) during its re-accreditation exercise.

A three-member assessment team from the Faculty of Neuropsychiatric and Mental Health of NPMCN, led by Professor Shehu Sale said the essence of the visit is to assess UPTH’s commitment to the mission and vision of the College–which is to “Plan, Implement, Monitor and Evaluate the Post Graduate Programs required to produce Medical and Dental specialists of the highest quality, competence and dedication–who will provide teaching and optimal health care for the people.”
Welcoming the team to UPTH on behalf of Management, the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Lucky Onotai, who represented the CMD, Prof. Henry Ugboma, assured the team that they will be impressed by the calibre of personnel and equipment they will meet during their tour of the institution.
After a thorough assessment by the visiting faculties, Prof. Shehu described the Neuropsychiatric and Mental Health Department as one of the best he has seen. While lamenting the relegation of psychiatric care in most hospitals in Nigeria, Shehu praised UPTH for giving mental health management priority attention. “I’m really impressed with what we saw, we have never seen this big structure; a stand-alone Psychiatric Department in a Teaching Hospital. We are neglected, stigmatized in building, staff and patients; but here, I saw a different thing and this is the best in the whole country.”
Prof. Shehu further concluded that there were no major challenges noticed during the tour, but suggested some areas Management should intervene for standard practice sake. This include Mask for Oxygen Concentrator, separate Wards for adolescents, a need for creation of a five member restrain team for patients with tendency to be aggressive and a recreation park for patients (especially patients under rehabilitation after treatment for drug abuse).
In his response, Prof Onontai appreciated the team for the visit, noting that it is designed to help UPTH improve on training and service delivery. He maintained that their recommendations are apt and promised that Management would address them in good time.
Re-accreditation is a routine exercise for training institutions like UPTH, to ensure global best practice. The Hospital’s Management is working vigorously to ensure all Departments gain full accreditation from accrediting institutions, to serve as attestation of excellence in UPTH.
