The Department of Internal Medicine, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital on Monday, 27th May 2019 welcomed the West African College of Physicians accreditation team to the hospital. The three-man team was comprised of Dr. Asi-Ogbu Ogugua, Dr. Tahir T. Mohammed and team leader Dr. Adesola Ogunniyi.
Dr. P.C Emem-Chioma, the HOD Internal Medicine formally introduced the team to the hospital management, stating that the team had arrived to carry out accreditation for the West African College of Physicians (W.A.C.P) for Neurology, Dermatology and Geriatrics Sub-Specialities.
The Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Prof Princewill C. Stanley on behalf of the CMD welcomed the Accreditation Team to the hospital and said the hospital was pleased to have the team which he described as “the three wise men” to the hospital, he said he believes it will attract more external blessings to the hospital.
The leader of the Accreditation Team, Dr. Ogunniyi thanked the CMAC for a warm welcome and mentioned that apart from the National Hospital Abuja, the other place accredited for Geriatrics training was UPTH and that was a good thing.
The Accreditation Team later proceeded to the different sub-specialties for the accreditation proper where the team carried out an inspection of the different units and its support services.
At the end of the inspection, the team members and consultants from Internal Medicine reconvened at the board and other members of the hospital’s management board were present.
Dr. Ogunniyi lauded the hospital for her level of cleanliness. He thanked the CMD for the state of the hospital and commended him for doing an overall great job in the hospital.
Dr. Ogunniyi noted that the hospital was lacking some machines for the proper functioning of the sub-specialties. He mentioned that training should be done for Psychiatric and Geriatric nursing and personnel should also be trained to handle equipment that would be acquired to guarantee their durability.
He mentioned that a Geriatrics Centre should be established and care for the elderly prioritized in the various clinics. ENT which is a support service for Geriatrics should be able to make recommendations and provide hearing aids and audiologist for audiological evaluation as it would bring revenue to the hospital. He advised that the end users should be involved in the procurement of consumables as staff complained of sub-standard consumables.
Addressing the accreditation team, the CMD apologized for not being around in the morning to welcome the team and mentioned that on the matter of the machines, arrangements were in motion for the requisition of such equipment. He said that some of the units/departments like the Geriatrics unit just began operations about one year of his being in office.
He appreciated the accreditation team for their coming and promised that in the next two months all the areas mentioned would be addressed.
The CMAC, Professor Princewill C. Stanley in a vote of thanks said that the hospital has already established the program for Occupational Therapy and Social Development which will be of immense help to patients and has also opened the Post Basic Nursing School in Mental Health and Paediatrics. He thanked the team for coming and wished them a safe journey back to their destinations.
