The Department of Haematology and blood transfusion is one of the four laboratory departments in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
The Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion offers laboratory, blood banking, and clinical services. The laboratory services involve the processing and running of samples for various haematological investigations while the blood bank is involved in safe blood donation, blood banking and dispatch of blood for transfusion. The blood bank also provides all the blood components used both in the hospital and other health facilities in some parts of south-south and southeastern Nigeria. The blood banking services run for 24 hours.
Clinical services, on the other hand, involve the diagnoses and care of patients with diverse haematological conditions both as outpatients and in the wards.
The department is headed by a consultant haematologist, Dr.(Mrs.) Kaladada Korubo. The department is endowed with two professors of haematology, four consultant haematologist, a good number of resident doctors, nurses, medical laboratory scientist, laboratory assistants, and other staffs.
FBC, blood film, ESR, Hb electrophoresis, ESR, Coagulation tests, bone marrow aspiration & biopsy, HIV, CD4 etc. (Most investigation results are ready between 24-72 hrs)
Blood Banking Services:
Blood grouping, cross-matching, screening for transfusion-transmitted infections (HIV, Hep B, Hep C), Direct Coomb’s test, blood component therapy etc.
Haematology clinics, daycare, ward rounds etc.
