Blood Drive 2019: Dept. Of Haematology & Blood Transfusion and Sickle Cell Awareness Forum (SCARF) Marks World Blood Donor Day

The Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital embarked on a Blood Donation outreach in collaboration with SCARF. The event which held on June 14, 2019, began with a road-walk from the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital to the University Campus, Abuja Park where the event was hosted. Free HIV screening and blood pressure check was on offer to members of the public.

The outreach proceeded with Blood Donor Awareness on the importance of blood donation, and participants and members of the public were encouraged to donate blood. The event was tagged ‘Safe Blood for All’.

The public was encouraged to donate blood so that blood will be readily available and free for all. The practice of relatives donating blood was also discouraged so as to reduce the risk of antibody inhibitors in the blood.

Doctors and Staff of the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital donated blood, as well as students of the University of Port Harcourt. Among blood donors at the event was popular radio presenter Ehidiana, of Wazobia FM.

The essence of this outreach was captured by the range of activities carried out including screening, education and blood donation.

The event came to a close with presentation of certificates to donors by the Head of the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion. Dr. K.I. Korubo, assisted by the SCARF founder,  Omubo–Pepple Tamunokuro Dabota.
