UPTH Radiology Department At Its Best: Fully Equipped And Functional

Departments in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) have keyed into the Prof. Henry Ugboma led administration’s drive in realizing the hospital’s vision statement of being a First Rate World Class Hospital

Dr. Ray-Offor Deborah, the current Head of Radiology Department (HOD) stated that the department is now fully equipped and functional–with well-trained manpower to meet its daily obligations while serving as the “Eye” of the Hospital.

In an exclusive interview with correspondents from UPTH Media & Publicity Unit, Dr Ray-Offor gave insight on how well equipped her department is and the array of services being rendered. She said, “…like we normally say Radiology is the eye of the hospital as our consults and referrals come from all the departments in the hospital.’’ She added that the department has full accreditations with three different bodies that monitor radiology practice in Nigeria. The bodies include; The National College of Postgraduate Medicine (NCPGM), West African Postgraduate college of Surgeons (WAPGCS), with approval and license to dispense radiation from Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) which is the government body for dispensing radiation in Nigeria.

Speaking further on the services that Radiology department offers, the HOD said, “…to offer services here, the department is made up of different sets of people that make us together as a team. We have the doctors, the radiographers, physicists, the nurses and the Health Assistants all working together with the Procurement Officers in the department… and our jobs are usually divided based on imaging modalities.” Some of these services include; Ultrasound Scans, Computerized Tomography (CT), X-rays, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) among others. She said the department also receives referrals from the neighboring states of Imo, Abia , Bayelsa and across the region.

“Radiology department is well able to cater for all the referrals and investigations in the sense that we have 13 consultants who are well-trained with certifications from licensing bodies, 22 radiographers who are certified by licensing bodies, we have resident doctors who are undergoing their residency trainings as well”, she said.

The HOD radiology commended the CMD and Management team, who ensured the procurement of power generating sets that provide 24-hour electricity supply for the ultrasound scan room ( the ultrasound scan machine, caters for those coming for pelvis, abdominal and prostrate scans), the MRI machine which is a 1.5 Tesla, projected to be one of the highest in this environment.

The department has advanced further with an expansion to annex centres in Paediatrics Department to cater for paediatrics cases, Accident and Emergency Unit for timely and all emergency cases and the Primary Healthcare Centre in Aluu for basic physiological primary health care issues.  Their services also extends to the theatres (for general and orthopaedic surgery) and also in the wards.
