The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital has commenced testing for COVID 19. This was announced by the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Prof. Henry Ugboma. He stated this when he led the management delegation that did the test-running of the COVID-19 test machine from Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC). Also, the programming and calibration of the available machine at the molecular laboratory was carried out-thereby bringing it to a total of two pre-qualified machines ready for sustained testing.
Team leader of the NCDC delegation said the lab will not only receive samples from Rivers State but from neighboring states. He commended the hospital management for their support in setting up a state of the art isolation/treatment centre–describing the molecular laboratory as well equipped with best practices equipment and among the best in the country. They also commended the high level of technical and well trained manpower on ground which is not surprising as two members of the four-man NCDC delegation were trained at the UPTH.
The CMD in his response said he is delighted for having the machines in UPTH and assured that management has put measures in place to ensure optimum utilization that will help the fight against the spread of corona virus.
