UPTH Commissions Second Isolation Centre For COVID-19

The second Isolation, Treatment and Testing Centre for COVID-19 was commissioned at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital on May 5, 2020. The three-floor centre is a fully equipped edifice with ventilators, respirators, monitors, piped-oxygen gas supply line, chlorine water, WHO standard PPEs and other state of the art life saving equipment. The first Isolation Centre was originally built for Lassa fever and Ebola, but the newly launched facility is dedicated solely for COVID-19. The integrated complex has capacity for testing, isolation and treatment of confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Chief Medical Director, UPTH, Prof. Henry Ugboma thanked the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari and the Honorable Minister for Health for creating the enabling environment and sustained efforts for containment and treatment of the pandemic in the country. Prof. Iyeopu M. Siminialayi, Provost, College of Health Sciences, University of Port Harcourt, commissioned the centre on behalf of His Excellency, Muhktar Ahmed Anka, Chairman, UPTH Management Board. He was supported by other members of the board in the persons of Prof. Ikimalo J. and Prof. Uzoigwe S.A.

Also present at the commissioning were the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, UPTH, Prof. Stanley Princewill, the Director of Administration, UPTH, Amasenibo (Deacon) Akie Opuene Hart, the Infectious Diseases Team led by Dr. Alasia D., and members Dr. Mrs. Maduka O. and Dr. Mrs. Awopeju T., the DCMACs-Dr. Oko-Jaja R., Dr. Onya O., Dr. Ocheli E. were present, as well as members of the armed forces, and other management staff.
